Chemical and physical heterogeneity within native gold: implications for the design of gold particle studies

Abstract Studies of populations gold particles are becoming increasingly common; however, interpretation compositional data may not be straightforward. Natural is rarely homogenous. Alloy heterogeneity present as microfabrics formed either during primary mineralization or by modification pre-existing alloys chemical and physical drivers subsequent residence in hypogene surficial environments. In electron-probe-microanalysis (EPMA)-based studies, the combination Cu, Hg, Pd values mineral inclusion suites diagnostic for source style mineralization, but Ag alone sufficient. Gold characterization studies laser-ablation-ICP mass spectrometry linked to both quadrupole Time-of-Flight (ToF-MS) systems show that only Ag, Hg form homogenous with Au sufficiently often act generic discriminants. Where present, other elements commonly distributed highly heterogeneously at micron submicron scale, inclusions localized, low concentrations. Drawing upon our own derived from individual inspection analyses approximately 40,000 526 placer situ localities worldwide, we adequate a specific locality normally requires study minimum 150 via two-stage approach comprising spatial heterogeneity, plus crystallographic orientation mapping, informs targeted acquisition quantitative EPMA and/or laser-ablation ICP-MS methods.
